Arnarskóli is a non-profit school for children with autism and other disabilities. The school was founded in 2017 by parents of children with disabilities and professionals.
Arnarskóli is the first privately run special education school in Iceland. The school is for children in 1st through 10th grade, that require one on one support for the whole day both for learning as well as participation in play and activities of daily living. Arnarskoli is unique as it provides services eight hours per day, all year round. By doing this we create an environment for our students where they are surrounded by staff that have in-depth knowledge of each students needs and strengths. Each student has an individualized education plan, based on a curriculum based skills assessment that was designed for children with special needs at the New England Center for Children, called Autism Curriculum Encyclopedia (ACE)
Funding for the school comes from each students school district. Currently we serve 29 students from all school district in the capital area of Iceland. For the upcoming schoolyear we will be serving 35 students.
To better serve our students, we are currently fundraising for a playground. All funds collected in the Reykjavik Marathon will go towards designing and building the playground. Our goal is to build a playground accessible to all and open to all children.
